Tell us about yourself!
My name is Thom Costello. I am from Seattle. I'm the son of a hairdresser and salon owner and have been in the hair industry for basically my whole life. I have worked
within every part of the hair industry, from behind the scenes at New York Fashion Week to behind the chair in the salon. I was a network educator for Bumble and Bumble for quite a few years before shifting to more freelance work and editorial. I have worked in TV and the music industry ranging from music videos to magazine publications.
I joined the
Living Proof creative team about a year and a half ago and it has been the most amazing experience thus far in my career. My passion is for education, both
teaching and learning. I'm excited to experience more and to meet and work alongside everyone at Salon Services and the amazing salons they work with.
What inspires you to work with Living Proof?
The connection. Every single part of Living Proof is awesome. From the scientists that they are working with to bring superior products to the industry to the stylists pushing the boundaries of hairstyling. When I joined the creative team, it was life changing. The support system in place to help each person to grow and evolve is unlike anything I've ever experienced anywhere. This is more than just a company. It's a family. I am inspired every day. It's been life and career changing.
What is your favorite part of your job?
How does one choose? Meeting new people and having the opportunity to work alongside so many amazing stylists from all over the world is such an amazing thing. Learning together and growing, building friendships. I honestly couldn't imagine a better job. I specialize in cutting and styling and have a great passion for constantly evolving that process and pushing myself. I wouldn't call it a job as much as a lifestyle.
Favorite Living Proof products you can’t live without?
I need them all! Each product individually is so special. The versatility of our products is second to none. I honestly couldn't choose a favorite. I change my product selection with every person that sits in my chair depending on my mood. I'm in love with each one.
What advice do you have for stylists and aspiring educators?
Love it. Honestly. Get lost in the process and create. I immersed myself in every aspect of hair from day one. Approach everything as an opportunity to learn. Don't narrow yourself by not allowing yourself to grow.
Be grateful and humble. We are all doing our part to expand the industry we love. Everyone is important. Have fun and be yourself. Focus on your craft and your own personal growth. Don't get caught up with trying to be somewhere else other than in the moment. The rest comes with time and experience.
