Salons Go Green with Green Circle

04.12.2018

Salons, spas, and barbershops produce some of the most dangerous and hard-to-manage waste―generating over 400,000 pounds daily in North America alone.

CEO and Founder, Shane Price, created Green Circle Salons because regular trash and recycling management doesn’t cater to salon waste. He was looking for a safe and effective way to reduce salons’ carbon footprint.

“Our mission is to make the North American salon industry sustainable by 2020. We are doing this in a way that is affordable, achievable and most importantly, impactful,” said Price.

Since 2009, Green Circle Salons has been repurposing, recycling, and capturing 95% of participating salon and spa waste. They currently have over 2,000 members across North America, including Davines, KEVIN.MURPHY, and Eufora.

How the Program Works

Green Circle Salons is a comprehensive recycling and repurposing program that ensures hair, foils, color tubes, plastics, papers, and residual hair color waste gets diverted out of our waste and water stream. Waste is then disposed of properly or repurposed. For example, hair is used to create “booms” that absorb oil in the event of oil spills.

All Green Circle Salons have individual recycling bins for waste that are picked up at your request or at your scheduled time. Not only do salons gain the pride of being environmentally friendly, but they also build revenue by attracting a base of green-minded clients. Participating salons also receive discounts on green-approved products like organic tea and coffee, energy efficient light bulbs, and eco-friendly cleaning products.

Green Circle Salons diverted one million pounds of salon waste from Green Circle’s landfill spaces and water streams across Canada and the United States in 2017.

If you are interested in becoming a sustainable salon, Green Circle offers two programs based on the size of your salon. To learn more, visit Green Circle Salons.
